Technical Selection Guide

When selecting your ConnectX adapter card, pay close attention to:

1. Protocol Mode (VPI vs EN)
#

  • EN Adapters only support Ethernet networks.
  • VPI (Virtual Protocol Interconnect) Adapters can be configured via firmware to operate either as an InfiniBand or Ethernet card, providing maximum deployment flexibility.

2. PCIe Bandwidth Requirements
#

Ensure your host server’s PCIe version and slot width can support the card at full speeds:

  • A dual-port 100G NIC requires PCIe 4.0 x16 to run both ports concurrently at full capacity.
  • Connecting a PCIe 4.0 card into a PCIe 3.0 slot is backward compatible, but the throughput will be capped at the PCIe 3.0 limit (approx. 64Gbps for x8, 128Gbps for x16).

3. OCP 3.0 vs Standard PCIe Form Factor
#

Models with suffixes like -ADAB, -CDAB, -HEAB use the OCP NIC 3.0 form factor. These cards slide into dedicated server bays (common in Supermicro, Dell, HPE, and Lenovo newer generations) and cannot be fitted into a standard PCIe slot.
