NVIDIA Mellanox LinkX Fiber Patch Cables — OM4 Multimode MPO#
NVIDIA LinkX® optical fiber patch cables provide physical connections between optical transceivers. Using original LinkX fiber cables ensures that connectors, ferrule polishes, and glass quality meet the strict insertion loss and return loss tolerances required for high-speed Ethernet and InfiniBand networking.

Technical Guide: Fiber Cable Specifications#
1. OM4 Multimode Fiber (MMF)#
- Core Diameter: 50µm (micrometer) core with 125µm cladding.
- Color Standard: Aqua/Erika Violet.
- Bandwidth: Optimized for VCSEL lasers operating at 850nm. OM4 supports distances up to 100m at 100Gb/s (SR4) or 150m at 25Gb/s (SR).
2. MPO-12 Connectors#
- Pin Configuration: MPO connectors are gendered. Transceivers have pins (male), so patch cables must be pinless / female (incorporating guide holes) to mate successfully.
- End-face Polish: Standard MPO connectors use PC / UPC (flat) polish. High-speed singlemode MPO and modern 400G/800G multimode OSFP/QSFP112 transceivers require APC (Angled Physical Contact, 8-degree slant) polish to eliminate back reflection. APC connectors are identified by green connector bodies.
3. MPO Polarity Standards#
For MPO-12 networks, polarity ensures that the transmitter on one end connects to the receiver on the other:
- Type-A (Key Up to Key Down): Straight-through wiring. Pin 1 connects to Pin 1.
- Type-B (Key Up to Key Up): Reversed wiring. Pin 1 connects to Pin 12. This is the industry standard for connecting two SR4 transceivers directly.
- Type-C (Pair-wise Flipped): Pin 1/2, 3/4 are flipped. Used primarily in structured backbone trunking.
