NVIDIA LinkX® Active Optical Cables (AOC) combine transceiver components and fiber cabling into a single, factory-terminated assembly. AOCs are designed for longer distances than copper DACs (up to 80 meters) while being lighter, thinner, and more flexible, making them ideal for high-density cable management within and across server rows.

Technical Comparison: DAC vs AOC
#

Choosing between Direct Attach Copper (DAC) and Active Optical Cables (AOC) depends on physical layout and airflow considerations:

1. Distance & Reach
#

  • DAC: Capped at 5m due to electrical attenuation over copper.
  • AOC: Supports lengths up to 80–100m, allowing connection of servers in different racks or rows.

2. Cable Weight & Thickness
#

  • DAC: Copper wire bundle is thick and heavy. 5m DAC bundles can weigh several kilograms, putting stress on cable management arms and blocking chassis exhaust airflow.
  • AOC: Extremely thin, flexible glass fiber. Minimal weight and airflow obstruction.

3. Latency & Power
#

  • DAC (Passive): Near-zero latency and 0W power consumption.
  • AOC: Optical conversion engines at each connector shell introduce a tiny fraction of latency (negligible in most workloads) and consume approximately 1–1.5W per plug end.
